Bergen scores for symmetry rather than arithmetic. You are not adding pips up, you are trying to leave both ends of the layout showing the same number.
Use a double-six set. Two players draw six tiles each; three or four players draw fewer, commonly five and four. The rest form the boneyard.
The lowest double opens the hand. If nobody holds a double, the lowest tile leads instead. From there you match numbers as in any standard domino game.
If you cannot play, draw a single tile from the boneyard. If it is playable you may play it; if the boneyard is empty, you pass.
A double-header is a layout where both open ends show the same number. Making one scores two points.
A triple-header is a double-header where one of those two matching ends is a double tile. Making one scores three points.
You also score when you go out: the player who plays their last tile takes the hand. If everyone is blocked, the lowest pip count wins it.
Agree the target before you start; fifteen points is a common choice, and short targets suit Bergen because points arrive in small, frequent increments. Unlike Block, holding a double is an asset here rather than a liability.
